How To Stay Grounded During The Holidays
The holidays are supposed to be magical. And sometimes they are. But sometimes they are also exhausting. Overwhelming. Lonely. Triggering. Expensive. Loud. And full of people and dynamics that you have spent the rest of the year healing from.
There is a reason so many of us feel off during the holidays. The season asks more of us than any other time of year. More socializing. More spending. More family. More food. More alcohol. More obligations. More comparison. More noise. More performance. And underneath all of it, an old ache that never fully goes away — the memory of what the holidays were supposed to be, or what they used to be, or what they never were.
Grief shows up during the holidays. Old family wounds show up. Old patterns show up. The nervous system gets overloaded. The body gets depleted. The mind gets scattered. And by the time January comes, you are not refreshed. You are recovering.
This is not a flaw in you. It is a flaw in how we have been taught to do the holidays. We have been taught to push through. To endure. To survive until the new year. But you do not have to survive the holidays. You can stay grounded through them.
This guide is about how to stay rooted in yourself during the most unrooting season of the year. Not by opting out. Not by pretending everything is fine. But by protecting your energy, honoring your limits, and staying in your own body — even when everything around you is pulling you out of it.
Why the Holidays Unsettle Us
The holidays are a threshold. And thresholds open things. They open the heart. They open the memory. They open the wounds. They open the joy. Everything gets amplified. The good gets better. The hard gets harder. Nothing stays neutral.
There is more stimulation. Lights. Music. Crowds. Conversations. Screens. Sugar. Alcohol. Noise. Your nervous system is processing more input in December than it does in most months of the year.
There is more expectation. This is supposed to be the best time of year. You are supposed to be happy. You are supposed to be grateful. You are supposed to love every minute. And when you do not, you feel like something is wrong with you.
There is more family. And family is where your deepest wounds live. Even if you love them. Even if you have healed a lot. Even if things are good. Being in the family system reactivates old roles, old patterns, old grief.
There is more comparison. Everyone's highlight reel is on display. Everyone's perfect dinner, perfect gifts, perfect partner, perfect children, perfect life. And your real life — with its mess and its limits and its quiet — can feel like it does not measure up.
There is more grief. For the people who are not here. For the holidays that used to be. For the childhood you did not get. For the family you wish you had. Grief gets louder in December.
There is more depletion. Sleep gets shorter. Food gets heavier. Movement gets less. Downtime disappears. And the body, which needs more care than usual, gets less.
Signs You Are Losing Your Ground
You feel scattered - You cannot focus, cannot rest, cannot land.
You feel anxious - There is a low hum of dread under everything.
You feel irritable - Small things set you off.
You feel exhausted - You wake up tired and go to bed wired.
You feel disconnected from yourself - You do not know what you want or how you feel.
You are overcommitting - You say yes when you mean no.
You are people-pleasing - You are managing everyone else's experience.
You are eating and drinking past your limits - Because it is there, because it is tradition, because it is easier.
You are skipping your practices - The morning ritual, the walk, the journal, the breath.
You feel guilty - For setting boundaries, for not doing enough, for wanting space.
You feel like you are performing - You are smiling when you do not mean it.
You cannot wait for it to be over - You are counting down the days until normal life returns.
How to Stay Grounded — A Practice for the Season
Start before the season starts
Do not wait until December to protect yourself. Start now. Decide what you want this season to feel like. Decide what you will say yes to and what you will say no to. Decide what traditions you are keeping and which ones you are releasing. Decide what your non-negotiables are. Get ahead of the season. Do not let the season decide for you.
Protect your mornings
Your morning practice is your anchor. Do not give it away in December. Even if it is three minutes. Even if it is a breath in bed. Even if it is a cup of tea before anyone else wakes up. Protect the first moments of your day. They set the frequency for everything else.
Keep one thing consistent
Everything changes in December. Schedules, food, sleep, routines, environments. Pick one thing and keep it steady. A morning walk. A nightly journal. A breath practice. A cup of tea before bed. One thing that does not change. One thing that tells your body: we are still here. We are still us.
Ground before you enter
Before any gathering, take five minutes. Feel your feet on the floor. Breathe. Visualize roots extending from your feet into the earth. Say: I am grounded. I am centered. I am myself. Do this in the car. In the bathroom. In the driveway. Wherever you need to. Do not walk in unrooted.
Shield your energy
Before you walk into a room, see a golden sphere of light around your body. See it glowing, warm, and strong. Say: I am protected. Only love and light may enter. What is not mine returns to its source. This is not paranoia. This is hygiene. You wash your hands before you eat. You shield before you enter.
Set your intention
Do not walk in without intention. Decide before you go: How do I want to feel? What do I want to experience? What do I want to protect? Set it. Then honor it.
Take breaks
You do not have to be present for every conversation. You do not have to stay in every room. You do not have to be "on" the entire time. Step outside. Go to the bathroom. Find a quiet corner. Breathe. Re-ground. Return when you are ready.
Have an exit plan
Know when you are leaving. Know how you are leaving. Give yourself permission to leave early. You do not owe anyone an explanation. You do not owe anyone your exhaustion. You are allowed to protect your peace.
Do not take the bait
Family knows where your buttons are. They installed them. The bait will come. Do not take it. Stay calm. Stay neutral. Say: I hear you. Then change the subject or step away.
Eat and drink with intention
The holidays are a marathon, not a sprint. Do not eat and drink past your limits because it is tradition. Sip water between drinks. Eat the things you actually want. Leave the things you do not. Your body is not a trash can for obligation. Your body is a vessel.
Move your body
Movement is grounding. Walk. Stretch. Dance. Whatever you can. Even ten minutes. Even five. Even a slow walk around the block. The body carries the nervous system. Move it. Let it release what it has absorbed.
Protect your sleep
Sleep is the foundation of your nervous system. Protect it. Go to bed when you are tired. Say no to the late-night conversation. Leave the party. Do not sacrifice your rest for the sake of appearances. Rest is sacred. Especially in December.
Say no
You do not have to attend every event. You do not have to buy every gift. You do not have to host everything. You do not have to do it the way it has always been done. Say no. Say it kindly. Say it clearly. Say it without over-explaining. Every no is a yes to something that matters more.
Honor your grief
If someone is missing this year, say their name. Light a candle for them. Let yourself feel what you feel. Do not push it down to keep the mood light. Grief does not disappear when you ignore it. It only waits.
Lower the bar
The holidays do not have to be perfect. They do not have to look like the commercials. They do not have to be anything other than what they are. Lower the bar. Let it be messy. Let it be enough. Let it be real.
Keep your practices
Do not abandon your meditation. Do not abandon your journal. Do not abandon your altar. Do not abandon your breath. The busier it gets, the more you need them. The more the world pulls, the more you must return.
Take the day after for yourself
The day after a gathering, rest. Do not schedule anything. Do not see anyone. Do not do anything. Let yourself recover. Let your nervous system settle. Let your body catch up. You deserve the recovery.
Cleanse after
When you get home, wash your hands and face. Change your clothes. Take a shower. Burn some sage. Use salt. Use sound. Leave the energy of the gathering at the gathering. Return to yourself.
Remember what the season is for
The holidays are not about the gifts. Not about the food. Not about the decorations. Not about the performance. They are about love. About connection. About rest. About light in the darkest part of the year. Return to that. Everything else is optional.

A Practical Practice — Holiday Grounding Meditation
Sit comfortably. Feel your feet on the floor. Take three deep breaths.
Visualize roots extending from your feet deep into the earth. Feel them anchor you. Say silently: I am grounded.
Visualize a golden sphere of light around your body. See it glowing, warm, and strong. Say silently: I am protected.
Bring to mind the gathering or the moment you are anticipating. See it clearly. See the room. See the people. See the energy. See yourself in it — grounded, centered, calm.
Say silently: I am in this space, but I am not of it. I am here, but I am also held. I am present, but I am sovereign.
Now bring to mind the version of you that wants to show up. Not the version that performs. Not the version that pleases. Not the version that survives. The version that is grounded, warm, honest, and free. See them. Feel them. Become them.
Say silently: This is who I am choosing to be. This is who I am bringing. This is who I am.
Take three more deep breaths. Let it settle into your body.
Gently return to your body. Open your eyes. Drink water. Ground. Carry this with you into the season.
Common Challenges
Feeling guilty for protecting yourself. Protecting yourself is not selfish. It is necessary. You cannot pour from an empty cup. You cannot show up for others if you have abandoned yourself.
Feeling like you have to attend everything. You do not. You are allowed to skip. You are allowed to leave early. You are allowed to choose what fills you and what drains you.
Feeling like you cannot say no. You can. Start small. Say no to one thing. Notice that nothing catastrophic happens. Notice that you feel lighter.
Feeling drained even with protection. Protection is a practice. It strengthens over time. Keep practicing. Keep cleansing. Keep returning.
Feeling like you are the only one struggling. You are not. Millions of us are navigating the same season with the same weight. You are not alone.
Relapsing into old patterns. Be gentle. The patterns are old. The healing is new. Notice. Return. Begin again.
Feeling like you have to make everyone happy. You do not. You are not responsible for anyone else's experience. You are only responsible for your own.
Feeling like it is too late to change the season. It is not. Every moment is a new beginning. You can start protecting your peace right now. In this breath. In this moment.
A Gentle Reminder
You do not have to survive the holidays. You can stay grounded through them. Not by opting out. Not by pretending. But by protecting your energy, honoring your limits, and staying in your own body.
You are allowed to say no. You are allowed to leave early. You are allowed to need rest. You are allowed to grieve. You are allowed to feel joy. You are allowed to feel both at the same time. You are allowed to be exactly where you are, exactly as you are.
And if you are experiencing intense physical symptoms, anxiety, or distress, please seek professional support. A trauma-informed therapist, counselor, or support organization in your area can help you in ways a blog post cannot. You deserve that support.
The season is here. The grounding is yours. The peace is now.
