The Hermetic Principles — The Kybalion Explained
There is a teaching that has survived every empire that tried to bury it. It has been whispered in temples, copied by hand in monasteries, hidden inside allegory, and passed from teacher to student for thousands of years. It predates the religions that came after it. It underlies the philosophies that claim to have discovered it. It is older than writing and it is written into the fabric of everything.
This teaching is Hermeticism. And its most famous distillation is a small book called The Kybalion.
The Kybalion was published in 1908 by three anonymous authors who called themselves "The Three Initiates." They claimed to be transmitting the essence of the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus — Thrice-Great Hermes — the legendary Egyptian-Greek sage said to be the father of alchemy, astrology, and the Hermetic arts. Whether the book is an ancient text or a modern synthesis is debated. It does not matter. What matters is what it teaches.
The Kybalion lays out seven principles. Seven laws that govern everything — mind, matter, energy, emotion, relationship, creation, and the movement of the cosmos itself. They are not commandments. They are not moral rules. They are descriptions of how reality actually works. And once you see them, you cannot unsee them. They are operating in your life right now, whether you know it or not.
This guide is an introduction to those seven principles. Not a scholarly analysis. Not a debate about origins. A transmission. The kind of teaching that was always meant to be passed from one waking soul to the next.
These principles are not ideas you learn. They are laws you remember. You have always lived under them. You have just not been naming them.
Part I: What Hermeticism Actually Is
Hermeticism is a spiritual, philosophical, and esoteric tradition attributed to Hermes Trismegistus. It flourished in Egypt and Greece in the early centuries of the common era and influenced Islamic mysticism, Christian mysticism, Kabbalah, alchemy, astrology, and virtually every Western esoteric tradition that followed. The core texts are the Corpus Hermeticum, the Asclepius, and the Emerald Tablet. The Kybalion is a modern distillation of their essence.
Hermeticism is:
A tradition of inner transformation.
A philosophy of mind, vibration, and correspondence.
The root system of Western esotericism.
A transmission, not a doctrine.
Practical, not theoretical.
Universal, not sectarian.
About becoming, not believing.
A map of how reality works.
Hermeticism is not:
A religion.
A cult.
A moral system.
A set of commandments.
A claim to exclusivity.
A replacement for your own path.
Something you have to convert to.
Something that requires belief to work.
What this means: You do not have to accept Hermeticism as a faith. You only have to test the principles in your own life. If they are true, they will show themselves. And they will show themselves everywhere.
Part II: The Seven Hermetic Principles — Overview
I - The Principle of Mentalism - All is mind. The universe is mental.
II - The Principle of Correspondence - As above, so below. As within, so without.
III - The Principle of Vibration - Nothing rests. Everything moves. Everything vibrates.
IV - The Principle of Polarity - Everything has its opposite. Opposites are the same in nature, differing only in degree.
V - The Principle of Rhythm - Everything flows in and out. Everything has tides. The pendulum swings.
VI - The Principle of Cause and Effect - Every cause has its effect. Every effect has its cause. Nothing happens by chance.
VII - The Principle of Gender - Gender is in everything. Masculine and feminine exist in all things.
What this means: These seven principles are not separate. They are one truth seen from seven angles. Mentalism is the ground. Correspondence is the mirror. Vibration is the movement. Polarity is the tension. Rhythm is the cycle. Cause and Effect is the chain. Gender is the creative union. Together they describe the whole of reality.
Part III: The Seven Principles — A Deep Dive
The Principle of Mentalism
The All is Mind. The Universe is Mental.
Everything that exists is first and foremost a mental construct. The universe is not made of matter that happens to be conscious. It is made of consciousness that happens to appear as matter. Thought is not a byproduct of the brain. The brain is a byproduct of thought.
This is the foundational principle. Without it, none of the others make sense. If all is mind, then everything you experience is a form of thought — yours, the collective's, and the universal's. Your life is a manifestation of your mind. Your world is a reflection of your consciousness.
This does not mean you can wish anything into being by thinking about it. It means that your thoughts are not separate from reality. They are the raw material of it. Change your mind, and you change what is possible. Change your consciousness, and you change your world.
Practice: For one day, treat every thought as an act of creation. Notice what you are creating. Notice what you are choosing to think.
The Principle of Correspondence
As above, so below. As below, so above. As within, so without.
This is the principle of mirrors. What is true in the largest scale is true in the smallest. What is true in the cosmos is true in the soul. What is true in the soul is true in the body. What is true in the body is true in the home. What is true in the home is true in the world.
Nothing is separate. The same patterns repeat at every level of existence. This means you can learn about the universe by studying yourself. And you can learn about yourself by studying the universe. The atom reflects the solar system. The family reflects the nation. Your inner world reflects your outer world.
This principle is why your outer life keeps mirroring your inner wounds. Your relationships reflect your unhealed patterns. Your finances reflect your beliefs about worth. Your body reflects your emotional state. Nothing is random. Everything corresponds.
Practice: Look at one area of your outer life that frustrates you. Ask: "What inner pattern is this mirroring?"
The Principle of Vibration
Nothing rests. Everything moves. Everything vibrates.
Everything in the universe is in constant motion. Nothing is truly solid. Nothing is truly still. The densest matter is made of vibrating particles. The subtlest thought is a wave of energy. The difference between a rock and a thought is not the presence of motion — it is the frequency.
This principle explains why frequency matters. Why your state of being attracts what it does. Why some people make you feel lifted and others drain you. Why music can heal and certain sounds can harm. Why prayer, mantra, and intention work. Everything is vibration. And vibration is contagious.
It also explains why you cannot fake a frequency. You can say kind words, but if the vibration beneath them is resentment, the vibration is what lands. The words are the surface. The frequency is the truth. And the frequency is what shapes your life.
Practice: Three times today, pause and ask: "What frequency am I broadcasting right now?" Adjust accordingly.
The Principle of Polarity
Everything is dual. Everything has poles. Everything has its opposite. Like and unlike are the same. Opposites are identical in nature, differing only in degree. Extremes meet. All truths are half-truths. All paradoxes can be reconciled.
Everything has its opposite. Hot and cold. Light and dark. Love and fear. Joy and grief. But opposites are not actually separate. They are the same thing at different ends of one spectrum. Cold is not the absence of heat — it is heat at a lower vibration. Fear is not the opposite of love — it is love at a lower vibration. They are one thing, and you can move along the spectrum by degrees.
This principle is the most freeing of all, because it means everything can be transmuted. You can move from fear to love. From hate to compassion. From grief to gratitude. Not by jumping from one end to the other, but by slowly moving along the spectrum. The opposite of any state you are in is available to you. You just have to travel toward it.
Practice: Choose one state you want to shift. Do not try to jump from fear to love. Move one degree toward love. Do it again tomorrow.
The Principle of Rhythm
Everything flows out and in. Everything has its tides. All things rise and fall. The pendulum swing manifests in everything. The measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left. Rhythm compensates.
Nothing stays still. Everything moves in cycles. The seasons. The tides. The moon. The breath. The heart. The rise and fall of empires, of love, of grief, of inspiration, of energy. Nothing in the universe moves in a straight line. Everything moves in rhythm.
This principle is what makes grief bearable. When you are in the downswing, it does not last forever. But it also means nothing on the upswing lasts forever either. Nothing is permanent — good or bad. This is the mercy of rhythm.
And there is a secret hidden in this principle. The Kybalion teaches that while you cannot stop the swing, you can learn to neutralize it. You can raise your consciousness above the pendulum and let the swing continue beneath you. This is the practice of equanimity. Not suppression. Not denial. Transcendence.
Practice: In a hard moment, say: "This too has a rhythm. This too will swing back. I do not have to swing with it."
The Principle of Cause and Effect
Every cause has its effect. Every effect has its cause. Everything happens according to law. Chance is a name for a law not recognized. There are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the law.
Nothing happens by accident. Everything that occurs is the result of a chain of causes. Some are visible. Most are invisible. But nothing is random. Chance is not real — it is just the name we give to the causes we cannot see.
This principle is what makes you responsible for your life. Not because you caused everything that happened to you. Because you are causing what happens next. Every thought is a cause. Every word is a cause. Every action is a cause. Nothing you do is neutral. Everything sets something in motion.
This principle also means you cannot blame others for where you are. You can trace how you got here. And more importantly, you can choose what you cause from here. You are always, in every moment, planting seeds. Whether you like it or not.
Practice: For one week, notice the effects in your life. Trace each one back. Ask: "What caused this? And what am I causing now?"
The Principle of Gender
Gender is in everything. Everything has its masculine and feminine principles. Gender manifests on all planes.
The universe is not made of one energy. It is made of two. Not male and female in the biological sense. Masculine and feminine as cosmic forces that exist in everything — in nature, in people, in thought, in creation, in the cosmos itself.
The masculine principle is active, directive, initiating, electric. The feminine principle is receptive, generative, magnetic, magnetic. Both are needed for anything to be created. Both are sacred. Both are within you.
This principle is why the world is out of balance. The masculine has been overvalued. The feminine has been suppressed. And within each person, one has been overdeveloped while the other has been neglected. The path forward is not to choose one. It is to reunite both — within yourself first, and then in the world.
Practice: Ask yourself: "Which principle do I overuse? Which one do I neglect?" Let the answer show you what needs to be restored.
Part IV: Signs You Are Already Feeling These Principles
Your thoughts create your reality - You notice that what you focus on tends to appear.
Your outer life mirrors your inner life - Your relationships, work, and body reflect your wounds.
You feel other people's energy - You can sense a room before anyone speaks.
Your emotions move in cycles - You notice ups and downs that follow patterns.
You notice polarity shifting - You catch yourself moving from fear to peace, or back.
You see cause and effect - You can trace how your actions create your outcomes.
You feel masculine and feminine within - You notice the active and receptive forces inside you.
The same patterns keep returning - The universe keeps giving you the same lesson in different forms.
Your words have weight - What you say aloud tends to manifest.
You feel the truth of "as within, so without" - Your outer world will not change until you do.
What this means: You have been living under these laws your whole life. You just have not been naming them. Once you do, your entire experience of reality shifts.
Part V: How to Work with the Hermetic Principles — A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Learn the Seven
You cannot work with what you do not know. Read the seven principles. Sit with them. Let them become familiar. Write them down. Say them aloud. Let them become part of your inner vocabulary.
Practice: Write the seven principles in your own words. Read them daily for a week.
Step 2: Start with Mentalism
The first principle governs the rest. If all is mind, then the work begins in the mind. Examine your thoughts. Notice what you are feeding. Notice what you are choosing to think. You do not have to control every thought. You do have to choose which ones to water.
Practice: For one week, watch your thoughts like a witness. Do not judge them. Just observe. Notice which ones you repeat.
Step 3: Apply Correspondence
Look at your outer life. It is a mirror. Your relationships, your money, your body, your home. What are they showing you? What inner pattern are they reflecting? You cannot change the outer until you change the inner. But once you do, the outer will follow.
Practice: Pick one recurring issue in your outer life. Ask: "What is this mirroring in me?"
Step 4: Work with Vibration
Everything is frequency. Yours is not fixed. You can raise it. Music. Breath. Movement. Nature. Prayer. Mantra. Gratitude. Beauty. Silence. Choose what raises your vibration and do it daily. Choose what lowers it and step away.
Practice: Each morning, check your vibration. Then do one thing that raises it.
Step 5: Use Polarity
You are never stuck at one pole. You can always move toward the other. If you are in fear, you can move one degree toward love. If you are in grief, you can move one degree toward acceptance. Not by faking. By degrees.
Practice: When you notice you are in a low state, do not try to jump. Just move one degree. Then another. Then another.
Step 6: Honor Rhythm
Everything has its season. When you are in a downswing, rest. When you are in an upswing, create. Do not push against the rhythm. Work with it. And remember — nothing lasts forever. Neither the pain nor the joy.
Practice: Ask yourself: "What season am I in right now?" Let your actions match the season.
Step 7: Take Responsibility for Cause
You are always causing something. Every thought, word, and action. Nothing is neutral. This is not a burden. It is power. It means you are never a victim of your circumstances. You are always, in every moment, shaping what comes next.
Practice: Each evening, ask: "What did I cause today?" Then ask: "What do I want to cause tomorrow?"
Step 8: Balance Gender Within
You carry both masculine and feminine. Do not deny either. The masculine initiates. The feminine receives. The masculine directs. The feminine generates. Both are needed. Both are sacred. Let them work together within you.
Practice: Ask: "Where am I too active? Where am I too passive?" Restore balance.
Step 9: Meditate on the Whole
The principles are not seven separate ideas. They are one truth seen from seven angles. Sit with all seven together. Feel how they interweave. Let them become one thing in your awareness. This is the beginning of Hermetic consciousness.
Practice: Spend ten minutes each morning sitting with all seven. Do not analyze them. Just feel them.
Step 10: Test Them in Your Life
Do not take this on belief. Test it. Apply each principle to a real situation. Watch what happens. The principles are not theory. They are operational laws. They will show themselves if you let them.
Practice: Choose one situation in your life. Apply one principle. Notice what shifts.
Step 11: Teach It to Someone
The best way to learn is to teach. Share one principle with someone who is open. Explain it in your own words. Notice how much deeper you understand it when you have to transmit it.
Practice: Teach one principle to one person this month.
Step 12: Let It Become a Way of Seeing
Eventually you will stop thinking about the principles. You will simply see through them. You will look at the world and instinctively see correspondence, vibration, rhythm, polarity. This is the goal. Not to memorize the laws. To become fluent in them.
Practice: When you notice something in your life, ask: "Which principle is at work here?"
Step 13: Stay Humble
These principles are not a badge of superiority. They are not an identity. They are not a way to be better than anyone. They are simply a clearer lens. Stay humble. Stay open. Stay willing to be wrong.
Practice: Each day, say: "I know a little. There is always more."
Step 14: Trust the Slow Unfolding
You will not master these in a week. Or a year. Or a lifetime. These principles are infinite. Every time you think you understand one, a deeper layer reveals itself. Trust the unfolding. Let it take the time it takes.
Practice: Each morning, say: "I am learning. I am remembering. I am unfolding."
Part VI: Affirmations for the Hermetic Principles
All is mind.
As above, so below.
As within, so without.
Nothing rests. Everything vibrates.
Everything has its opposite. I can move toward the light.
Everything has its rhythm. I do not have to swing with it.
I cause what comes next.
Both masculine and feminine live in me.
I am becoming.
I am.

Part VIII: A Practical Practice — Hermetic Principles Meditation
Ground: Sit comfortably. Feel your body supported. Feel your feet on the floor. Visualize roots extending deep into the earth. Say silently: I am grounded. I am here.
Breathe: Take five slow, deep breaths. Let the belly expand. Let the exhale be longer than the inhale. Say silently: I am calm. I am clear.
Open: Bring your awareness to the space between your thoughts. Rest there for a few moments. Say silently: All is mind. I am part of the mind of the All.
Correspondence: Look inward. Notice one inner pattern. Now look outward. Notice where it shows up in your life. Say silently: As within, so without. My outer world mirrors my inner world.
Vibration: Feel the vibration of your body. The pulse. The breath. The subtle hum underneath everything. Say silently: Nothing rests. Everything vibrates. I am vibration.
Polarity: Bring to mind one state you want to shift. See the opposite pole across from it. Say silently: I can move along the spectrum. I can move one degree toward the light.
Rhythm: Feel the rhythm of your breath. The rise and fall. The pulse of your heart. Say silently: Everything has its rhythm. I do not have to swing with it.
Cause: Bring to mind one thing you will do today. Know that it is a cause. Say silently: I cause what comes next. My thoughts, words, and actions are seeds.
Gender: Feel the masculine and feminine within you. The active and the receptive. The directing and the generating. Say silently: Both live in me. Both are sacred. Both are needed.
Stillness: Sit in the presence of all seven for ten minutes. Do not analyze. Just feel. Let them interweave. Let them become one thing.
Close: Gently return to your body. Open your eyes. Drink water. Eat something grounding. Carry one principle with you today.
Part IX: Common Challenges (and How to Overcome Them)
Feeling like this is too abstract - Start with one principle. Apply it to one situation. Let it become concrete through experience.
Feeling like you are not "getting" it - You are. The principles reveal themselves in layers. Understanding comes through living, not studying.
Feeling like you have to believe it - You do not. Test it. Apply it. See for yourself.
Feeling overwhelmed by seven principles - Do not try to hold all seven at once. Learn one. Live with it for a month. Then add another.
Feeling like it is not working - It is. The shift is subtle. Look at how you see the world now versus a month ago.
Feeling superior to others who do not know - That is the ego, not the wisdom. Stay humble. These are not a badge. They are a lens.
Feeling like you have to leave your life - You do not. The principles are applied in the ordinary. In the kitchen. In the commute. In the conversation.
Feeling like you should be further along - There is no further along. There is only here. And here is where the work is.
Feeling afraid of the responsibility - Of course you are. Responsibility is heavy. But it is also freedom. You are not a victim. You are a cause.
Feeling alone in this study - You are not. Millions have studied these principles. Find one person to walk with. One is enough.
Part X: A Gentle Reminder
You have always lived under these laws. You have just not been naming them. The principles are not new. They are ancient. Older than any religion that claims them. Older than any empire that buried them. They are written into the fabric of reality itself.
You do not have to become Hermetic to work with them. You only have to see them. And once you see them, you cannot unsee them. They will show up in your relationships, your work, your health, your inner life. They will show up in the way you think, speak, and create.
The Kybalion is not a book you finish. It is a book you live. Every reread reveals something new. Every application reveals something deeper. Every year of study reveals how much you still have to learn.
That is not a problem. That is the path.
And if you are experiencing intense physical symptoms, anxiety, dissociation, or distress, please seek professional support. A trauma-informed therapist, counselor, or support organization in your area can help you in ways a blog post cannot. You deserve that support.
The principles are ancient. The transmission is unbroken. The remembering is now.
