The Law Of Mentalism — All Is Mind
Before there was matter, there was mind. Before there was form, there was thought. Before there was anything you could touch, taste, see, or measure, there was the awareness that made touching, tasting, seeing, and measuring possible in the first place. That awareness is not a product of the universe. The universe is a product of it.
This is the first principle of Hermetic wisdom. It is the foundation on which all the others rest. And it is the one most of us have been trained to dismiss.
We were taught that consciousness is a byproduct of the brain. That matter came first, and mind emerged from it. That thought is what happens when neurons fire in a certain pattern. That when the body dies, awareness ends. This is the story of modern materialism. It is a story that has produced extraordinary technology and extraordinary emptiness. And it is, according to the Hermetic tradition, exactly backwards.
The Law of Mentalism says: The All is Mind. The Universe is Mental.
It says that consciousness is not a byproduct of reality. It is the substance of it. It says that everything you see — the chair, the sky, the face of the person you love, the fear in your chest, the dream you had last night, the empire you live inside of — is a form of thought. Not metaphorically. Actually.
The universe is not made of things. It is made of mindstuff. And you are not a small consciousness inside a large unconscious universe. You are a point of awareness inside a universe that is itself aware. You are a wave in an ocean of consciousness. And your thoughts are not separate from reality. They are the raw material of it.
This is not a belief you have to adopt. It is a lens you can test. And once you test it, everything changes. Not because the world changes. Because you finally see what the world has always been.
Part I: What the Law of Mentalism Actually Is
The Law of Mentalism is the first of the seven Hermetic principles. It states: The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental. Everything that exists is a manifestation of consciousness. Consciousness is not a feature of reality. It is the fabric of it.
To understand this, you have to let go of a very old assumption. You have been taught that consciousness lives inside matter — that your awareness is contained within your body, and the universe outside of you is inert, unconscious, and mechanical. The Law of Mentalism says the opposite. Awareness is primary. Matter is secondary. You are not a small awareness inside a large dead universe. You are a small focal point inside a vast living mind.
This does not mean you can wish anything into being by thinking about it. It means something more subtle and more powerful. It means that thought is not separate from reality. Thought is the first movement of creation. Everything that exists was first thought before it was. Every empire was imagined before it was built. Every relationship was dreamed before it happened. Every wound was created by belief before it appeared in the body. Thought is not passive. Thought is the original creative act.
The Hermetic tradition names this first principle the most important of the seven. Without it, the others have no ground to stand on. If all is mind, then correspondence makes sense — because your inner world and outer world are made of the same substance. Vibration makes sense — because thought is a frequency. Polarity makes sense — because mental states can be transmuted. Rhythm makes sense — because mind moves in cycles. Cause and effect makes sense — because thought is a cause. Gender makes sense — because mind has both active and receptive aspects. Everything flows from this one.
You do not have to accept this on belief. You can test it. Watch your life. Watch how your inner state shapes your outer experience. Watch how your thoughts produce your moods, your moods produce your choices, and your choices produce your life. The Law of Mentalism is not a philosophy. It is an observable fact. It is operating in your life right now, whether you recognize it or not.
Part II: The Difference Between Mentalism and Positive Thinking
Most people confuse the Law of Mentalism with the idea that positive thoughts create positive outcomes. It is not that. Positive thinking is a surface practice. Mentalism is a structural one.
Positive thinking says: If I just think happy thoughts, good things will happen. If I force myself to be optimistic, the universe will reward me. If I affirm abundance, money will come.
Mentalism says: Thought is the substance of reality. Your entire experience of the world is constructed by the mind. Change the mind, and you change what is possible. Change consciousness, and you change what you can perceive, receive, and create.
Positive thinking is often just denial with a smile. It bypasses what is real. Mentalism does not bypass anything. It looks straight at reality and recognizes that reality is mind-made. It asks not "how do I think better?" but "what am I actually creating?" It does not suppress fear. It sees fear as a thought and takes responsibility for it.
Positive thinking can be performed. Mentalism cannot. You cannot fake a frequency. You can only change it. And to change it, you have to look at what is actually there — your real beliefs, your real fears, your real stories — not cover them with affirmations that do not land.
What this means: If you have tried positive thinking and it has not worked, this may be why. Positive thinking works on the surface. The Law of Mentalism works at the root. And the root is where the change actually happens.
Part III: Signs You Are Already Experiencing the Law of Mentalism
Your focus shapes your reality - What you look for, you find. What you ignore, you lose.
Your beliefs create your experience - You have had things happen because you believed they would.
Your thoughts affect your body - Anxiety creates tension. Shame creates heaviness. Fear tightens the chest.
People respond to your inner state - When you are calm, others calm down. When you are tense, others brace.
Your dreams are vivid and meaningful - Your subconscious is speaking to you in symbols.
You sense things before they happen - You know before you know.
Your environment mirrors your mind - A cluttered home matches a cluttered inner life. An empty home matches emptiness.
Your money reflects your beliefs - Your relationship with money mirrors your beliefs about worth.
Your relationships repeat patterns - The same dynamic keeps showing up with different people.
You notice synchronicities - Coincidences increase when you are aligned.
Your mood shapes the day - A bad mood sours everything. A good mood lifts it.
You have experienced manifestation - You asked for something and it appeared.
Your words have weight - What you speak about starts showing up.
You have felt the universe respond to you - You have noticed that life speaks back.
You know things you cannot prove - There is a knowing beneath the thinking.
What this means: The Law of Mentalism has been operating in your life since before you had a name for it. You have felt its effects. You have just been calling them something else — intuition, coincidence, luck, personality, mood. They are all the same law, seen from different angles.
Part IV: How to Work with the Law of Mentalism — A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Watch Your Thoughts Without Judgment
You cannot change what you do not see. The first practice is observation. Watch your thoughts. Not to fix them. Not to judge them. Just to see them. Notice what you repeat. Notice what you feed. Notice what runs underneath the day.
Practice: For one week, spend five minutes each evening writing down the thoughts that ran most often through your mind that day. No judgment. Just observation.
Step 2: Identify Your Core Beliefs
Underneath your thoughts are beliefs. Beliefs are thoughts you have repeated so many times that you no longer question them. Find them. Look for the ones that begin with "I am," "people are," "the world is," "money is," "love is." Those are your operating instructions. Those are the ones creating your life.
Practice: Write down ten "I am" statements. Then ask: "Do I actually believe this? Or did I inherit it?"
Step 3: Question the Beliefs You Did Not Choose
Most of your beliefs are not yours. You inherited them from family, culture, teachers, wounds, and fear. Take them one at a time. Ask: "Is this true? Is this mine? Where did it come from? Does it still serve me?" You do not have to throw them all away. You just have to know which ones are yours.
Practice: Choose one belief that limits you. Trace it back. Who taught it to you? When did you start believing it?
Step 4: Choose What You Feed
You cannot control every thought. You can control what you feed. You choose the input. The shows, the conversations, the scroll, the music, the people. Every input is a seed. Every seed grows. Choose what you want to harvest.
Practice: For one week, remove one input that lowers your frequency. Replace it with one that raises it.
Step 5: Speak With Intention
Your words are not neutral. They are declarations. Every time you say "I am tired," you are telling the universe what to give you. Every time you say "I always fail at this," you are writing the script. Speak as if your words are creating your life. Because they are.
Practice: For one week, watch your language. If you catch yourself speaking a belief you do not want, pause. Reframe it. Say it differently.
Step 6: Take Responsibility for Your Experience
This is the hardest step. It does not mean you caused everything that happened to you. It means you are responsible for what happens next. You are the author of your response. You are the chooser of your interpretation. You are the one who decides what this moment means and what you will do with it.
Practice: The next time something happens, ask: "What story am I telling about this? Is it the only story? What story serves me better?"
Step 7: Use Imagination as Instruction
Imagination is not fantasy. It is instruction to the mind. What you imagine repeatedly becomes what you perceive. What you perceive becomes what you attract. What you attract becomes your life. Use your imagination deliberately. Visualize what you want to experience. Do it daily. Do it with feeling.
Practice: Spend five minutes each morning imagining your day going well. Feel it in your body. Let it be real.
Step 8: Work With Symbols and Metaphor
The mind speaks in images, not arguments. If you want to change something, speak to the mind in its own language. Use symbols. Use metaphor. Use visualization. Use ritual. The subconscious responds to picture, story, and sensation — not to logic.
Practice: When you want to change a belief, give it an image. If you want to release fear, imagine fear as a shape and see it dissolve. The image does the work the argument cannot.
Step 9: Master Your State Before You Change Your Circumstances
You cannot fix your life from a state of panic. You cannot create from fear. You cannot attract from lack. Get into a grounded, clear, calm state first. Then act. The state is the foundation. Everything is built on it.
Practice: Before any important decision, action, or conversation, spend five minutes getting into your state. Breath. Ground. Center. Then move.
Step 10: Stop Looking for Evidence of Your Old Story
The mind is a pattern-recognizer. It looks for confirmation of what it already believes. If you believe you are unlucky, you will find proof everywhere. If you believe you are unlovable, you will notice every rejection and miss every warmth. Stop looking for evidence of the old story. Start looking for evidence of the new one.
Practice: Each day, look for one piece of evidence that your new belief is true. Write it down.
Step 11: Let the Old Mind Die
You cannot think your way into a new life while holding the old mind. Let it die. Let the beliefs that no longer serve you fall. Let the identity that was built on them collapse. It will feel like loss. It is actually a door.
Practice: Write down the version of you that you are ready to release. Say aloud: "I release this identity. It served me. It is no longer mine."
Step 12: Live as If
Live as if the new belief is already true. Not fake it till you make it. Live as if. The difference is subtle. Faking is performance. Living as if is embodiment. Begin to behave as the version of you who already has what you are calling in. Move from that place.
Practice: Ask: "How would the version of me who already has this move through today?" Then move that way.
Step 13: Trust the Slow Rebuild
The mind does not change overnight. You are rebuilding a structure that took decades to build. Be patient. Be gentle. Notice small shifts. Honor them. The change is happening. It is happening in the roots, not the leaves.
Practice: Every week, note one way your perception has shifted. Let yourself see the accumulation.
Step 14: Become the Observer
The deepest practice is to become the observer. Not the thoughts. Not the beliefs. The awareness behind them. When you can rest as the observer, you are no longer at the mercy of the mind. You are the one watching it. And from that place, everything can be changed.
Practice: Each day, sit for five minutes in pure observation. Watch thoughts come and go. Do not engage. Do not fix. Just watch. Rest as the awareness behind the mind.

Part VII: A Practical Practice — Law of Mentalism Meditation
Ground: Sit comfortably. Feel your body supported. Feel your feet on the floor. Visualize roots extending deep into the earth. Say silently: I am grounded. I am here.
Breathe: Take five slow, deep breaths. Let the belly expand. Let the exhale be longer than the inhale. Say silently: I am calm. I am clear.
Observe: Bring your awareness to your thoughts. Watch them come and go. Do not engage. Do not fix. Do not judge. Just watch. Let them move like clouds across a sky. Say silently: I am not my thoughts. I am the awareness behind them.
Ask: Ask silently: What am I creating with my mind right now? What beliefs are running in the background of my life? Let the answers rise. Do not force them.
See: Bring to mind one belief that is limiting you. See it as a shape. A wall. A dark stone. A chain. See it clearly.
Dissolve: Now imagine the shape softening. Dissolving. Returning to the awareness that made it. Say silently: This belief is a thought. A thought is not the truth. I release it.
Replace: Bring to mind the belief you would rather hold. See it as a light. A golden thread. A warm glow in your chest. Say silently: This is what I am choosing. This is what I am creating.
Imagine: Visualize your life as if the new belief were already true. See the version of you who lives from it. Feel the frequency of that version. Let it fill your body.
Rest: Sit in this new frequency for ten minutes. Let it settle. Let it become real in your nervous system.
Close: Gently return to your body. Open your eyes. Drink water. Eat something grounding. Carry the frequency with you into your day.
Part VIII: Common Challenges (and How to Overcome Them)
Feeling like this is just positive thinking - It is not. Positive thinking is surface. Mentalism is structural. Look at your actual beliefs, not your affirmations.
Feeling like you cannot control your thoughts - You cannot control every thought. You can choose what you feed. You can become the observer. Start there.
Feeling like you are faking it - You are not. You are practicing. Faking is performing for others. Practicing is building a new structure within.
Feeling overwhelmed by how much needs to change - Do not try to change everything at once. Choose one belief. Work with it for a month. Then the next.
Feeling like nothing is shifting - Something is. The shift is subtle. Look at how you respond to old triggers now versus a month ago.
Feeling like you are responsible for everything - You are responsible for your response, not for everything that happened to you. This is not blame. It is power.
Feeling afraid of the responsibility - Of course you are. It is heavy. It is also freeing. You are not a victim of your reality. You are a co-creator.
Feeling disconnected from your body - Ground. Ground. Ground. The mind is powerful. The body is where it lands. Do not skip the body.
Feeling like you are alone in this - You are not. Millions are waking up to this principle. Find one person to walk with.
Falling back into old patterns - Be gentle. Old beliefs are old. You are building a new structure on top of an old one. It takes time.
Feeling superior to others who do not see this - That is the ego, not the wisdom. Stay humble. Stay present. Stay kind.
Feeling like it is not working - It is. Trust the slow rebuild. Trust the accumulation. Trust the becoming.
Part IX: A Gentle Reminder
You are not a small awareness inside a dead universe. You are a point of consciousness inside a universe that is itself conscious. Everything you see, touch, taste, and feel is a form of thought. Everything you fear, desire, remember, and imagine is a form of thought. Nothing is separate from the mind. Nothing is outside of it.
That is the Law of Mentalism. And it is not a belief you have to adopt. It is a lens you can test. Test it. Apply it. Watch what happens. Watch how your inner world shapes your outer world. Watch how your beliefs become your experience. Watch how your thoughts become your life.
You are not at the mercy of your mind. You are the awareness behind it. And from that place, everything can be changed. Not by force. Not by will. By seeing clearly, choosing consciously, and living deliberately.
And if you are experiencing intense physical symptoms, anxiety, dissociation, or distress, please seek professional support. A trauma-informed therapist, counselor, or support organization in your area can help you in ways a blog post cannot. You deserve that support.
